Max Miranda and Swim Team Highlight Busy Weekend for the Hawks

by Bobby Bordieri

This past weekend Hawks were flying all around, as our Swimming and Indoor Track & Field teams were both competing for state championships, in addition to our hockey team's playing in two very important games as well.

The swim team scored an astonishing 383 points as they overwhelmingly won their 25th state title in the past 26 years by a 165-point margin over the second place finishers, Barrington. Sophomore Max Miranda undoubtedly was prominent in the Hawks' capturing the crown. Miranda, a consensus high school All-American, was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard medley relay (which also included Marc Andrews, Lucas Stencel, and Owen Schriber), and the 400-yard freestyle relay (Troy Pina, Dillane Wehbe, and Brendan Crowe).

Another first place finish went to the 200-yard freestyle relay team consisting of Troy Pina, Owen Schriber, Gian Paterno, and Marc Andrews.

Hawks Indoor Track and Field, on the other hand, did not go as well as planned. The Hawks finished in third place behind Lasalle Academy and Barrington, respectively. Bishop Hendricken scored a total of 48 points. The Hawks only had one first place finisher on the day, Senior Ben Murphy in the high jump (6 feet, 4 inches). In both the 4x200 and 4x400 relays the Hawks finished in third place, while the 4x800 finished fourth.

On the ice, the Hawks hockey team went into last weekend facing two tough and important games at Adelard Arena, one against Mount St. Charles and the other against Lasalle Academy. The Hawks managed to start out with a 2-0 after the first period against Mount, but the Mounties kept chipping away and eventually tied the game at 2. After the Hawks had re-taken the lead, the Mounties were able to tie the game again after the Hawks were flagged for a major penalty. The game resulted in a tie consequent to Interscholastic League rules, after neither team could score in the five minute extra session.

The Hawks were then at it again the following night against the Rams, a game that was broadcast live right here on The Network and can still be seen right here:

As most Hawks-Rams usually go, this one also went down to the wire. With the score tied at one goal apiece late in the game, the Rams scored to take a 2-1 lead and managed to hang on to secure the victory, moving them into a first place tie with the Hawks.
