This past Friday, October 17, our Hendricken Hawks' soccer team saw “eye to eye” with the North Kingstown Skippers, as the game ended in a scoreless draw and added yet another tie to the Hawks' slate. The Hawks currently stand in 6th place in Division 1 with a record of 6 wins, 2 losses and 4 ties. North Kingstown is tied with the Hawks there as well (based upon points), with a record of 6 wins, 5 losses, and 1 tie.
North Kingstown had a rough start, as less than a minute into the game, one of NK's starters, Quinton Mulligan, stopped the clock with an injury but kept playing. Throughout the first half, the Hawks' Lucas Gesmundo successfully juked and moved through the NK defenders, but unfortunately, none of his shots on goal pierced the back of the Skippers' net. About 30 minutes into the second half, however, the Hawks saw a real advantage, as the starting NK goalkeeper, Mike Varrecchione, was injured and his backup was in; but, similar to the first half, the Hawks managed to launch what looked to be opportunistic attacks on the NK net, but not a single shot resulted in a goal.
Hendricken tallied 5 shots, compared to North Kingstown’s 3, and although both teams were determined, neither the Hawks nor the Skippers could secure what could have been a crucial win with the state playoffs quickly approaching. The Network will have each of the Hawks' next two contests LIVE, against archrival LaSalle Academy tomorrow night at 6pm and against Hope High School on Thursday night. Both games are at home on the Hayden Stadium turf, and Thursday's game will be Senior Night, as it will be the last Hendricken home game for the senior members of this year's soccer team.
